Wallace Hartley Limited Edition
New product story to inspire in-house R&D team
After a conversation with Creative Director Zaim Kamal, my brief was to inspire the design team in Hamburg with a fresh product story for the Great Characters Limited Edition Collection.
Starting with a study of the brand and its positioning, my strategy was to introduce sound in the design of a limited edition Montblanc pen.
The fountain pen celebrates the life of an unsung hero of the era of transatlantic liners. 2018 marks the 140th anniversary of the birth of Wallace Hartley, the orchestra conductor of the RMS Titanic.
The writing instrument references the elegant silouettte of an orchestra conductor’s baton and its pure lines draw upon Montblanc’s heritage collections and design languages. A tool of inspiration with at its heart a unique music mechanism.
ROLE: brand study, positioning, ideation, sketching, storytelling, 3D design, rendering, CGI animation.
OUTCOME: new product story to introduce sound in the design of the product, highly resolved CGI visuals and prototypes.
CLIENT: Montblanc International (prospect)
In an inspiring act of generosity, after the Titanic hit an iceberg and began to sink, Hartley and his orchestra remained on deck and started playing to keep the passengers calm as they boarded the lifeboats.
The concept for the limited edition pen sparks from an admiration for such gesture. The idea was to design a tool of inspiration, with at its heart a unique music mechanism.
In a buzzing tactile experience, five notes are produced as the cap is removed, setting the tone of that intimate interaction between the writer and the blank page.
