KTN Sprints at Scale
Streamlining team workflow through an agile way of working
New Ways of Working Workshop Design Facilitation
THE CHALLENGE
An increasing pressure on Innovate UK KTN's Innovation Studio: both internal and external stakeholders are demanding an increasing number of workshop activities to be designed bringing the 5-strong team up to capacity and making it unable to meet the demand.

THE APPROACH
To avoid having to create bespoke workshops from scratch every time the team was requested a participatory activity, I recomended that the team would offer offer only 1 product: modular design sprints. To do this we collaboratively expanded on the GV Design Sprint process by breaking it down into simple modules that can be assembled and deployed flexibly within a time frame that goes from 1 hour to 1 week.

THE RESULT
The outcome of this work was a series of modules that could be assembled 'like lego bricks' into easily tailored sprints. This modular design sprint was specifically fine tuned to the needs of a public sector organisation, including among others:
-
Pre-sprint workshop: to work with the client who requests the workshop activity in defining the roles and overall ambitions of the project. This is also deployed to understand whether the project team is ready for a sprint or whether it needed activities such as a piece of user research or strategic planning to be carried out first.
-
Impact tracking workshop: this is a 2-part workshop based on 2 logic models. Part 1 aims to define what is the expected impact of the sprint and the metrics of success. Part 2 reflects on the learnings and defines the transformation that the Sprint activities facilitated.
-
2-hour problem framing module: to align a team of up to 8-10 participants around a shared definition of the problem space and the opportunities within it.
-
2-hour ideation module: to bring together a team of up to 8-10 participants to create and prioritise solution ideas collaboratively in an agile way.
